Show Me the Green

UTM’s Undergraduate Commerce Society hosted theseventh annual Show Me the Green conference last Saturday in the Instructional Building.

The SMG conference is an environmental business case competition in which students from universities across the province design green products and services and propose their ideas to a panel of judges.

This year, students from five Ontario universities attended, with 20 four-member teams.

“Show Me the Green was a learning experience from start to finish. I didn’t just learn about sustainable practices, but I also developed time management and organizational skills,” said Mariana Rocha, a participant from UTM.

The conference started with an opening speech by Deep Saini, the vice-president and principal of UTM.

Following the opening ceremony, the teams were invited to go into their assigned rooms for the competition.

“Overall, Show Me the Green was a rewarding experience. Combining sustainability and accounting presented a unique challenge because it forced us to address the case from both an environmental and economic perspective,” said Joanne Evangelista, another UTM student who participated in the event. “I look forward to implementing some of the green initiatives that were introduced during the conference.”

Besides the case competition, the event included a Twitter Challenge in which prizes were awarded for the most creative tweets about SMG.
